The "Oakland International Airport" has been renamed to the "San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport."
The Oakland Airport in California has decided to change its name. The goal is to draw more travelers and clearly showcase the airport's location within the state.
Despite the name change, the airport's code, OAK, and logo will remain the same.
Craig Simon, the Interim Director of Aviation, has assured that the new name won't impact the convenience and ease of traveling through the airport. He also mentioned that OAK is the closest major airport to 58% of the Bay Area population, and the new designation will help showcase the airport's reach to the world.
The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners unanimously voted to change the name.
The decision to change the name hasn't been without challenges. According to Reuters, the city of San Francisco has filed a lawsuit against the airport, arguing that the new name infringes on the city's trademark rights and will likely lead to confusion among consumers and the public.

San Francisco operates its own airport, the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), which is located in San Mateo County.
The Port of Oakland has counter-sued the city of San Francisco and requested the court to rule that the new name doesn't violate any trademark rights, according to a statement.
In the statement, Port Attorney Mary Richardson said the following:
"Changing 'Metropolitan' to 'San Francisco Bay' in Oakland Airport's name accurately describes OAK's geographic location on the Bay and presents the airport as an additional choice for travel into the San Francisco Bay Area. SFO's lawsuit is a disappointing and anticompetitive effort to discourage competition and choice, and we're confident the Court will agree."
Similarly, the Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET) changed its name earlier this year from the "Saint-Hubert Airport". This move has sparked similar controversy and legal proceedings by the Aéroports de Montréal (ADM), which operates the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), according to the CTV News.
