JetBlue is making it more affordable for travelers to fly with the carrier by including a carry-on bag with their basic economy tickets starting this fall.

The airline has just announced that starting September 6th, passengers who book a Blue Basic ticket will now be able to enjoy a free carry-on bag as part of their booking. This new policy will apply to all Blue Basic tickets, no matter when you make your reservation.

Currently, most Blue Basic tickets don't include a carry-on bag, and travelers who bring one must pay an additional fee to check it ($65 for the first or second bag). The exception is for transatlantic flights where Blue Basic tickets do include a carry-on bag but passengers have to pay for any checked bags.

Here's what Marty St. George, the president of JetBlue, said in a statement:

"Carry-on bags are an important part of the travel experience for our customers, and when faced with a choice between JetBlue's award-winning service and another airline's basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the clear winner. We're always looking for ways to enhance our offering in response to customer preferences. This is a win-win situation, as we're improving the customer experience and keeping JetBlue competitive in the industry."

With the upcoming policy change, Blue Basic passengers will be allowed to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item along with their tickets, much like how Blue fare passengers can do right now. However, Blue Basic travelers will still have to pay for any checked bags they want to bring, and they won't get the additional benefits that come with higher fare categories, such as the flexibility to make changes to their ticket or the option to choose their seat without incurring an extra charge.

The recent JetBlue's carry-on policy change for their Blue Basic fares is a significant development for budget-minded travelers. However, fees may still apply for checked bags. The decision to include a carry-on bag in Blue Basic tickets comes a couple of months after JetBlue revamped its bag pricing structure, introducing a peak and off-peak pricing system, which went into effect on March 22nd. This change also follows the airline's quiet increase in baggage prices in February.

JetBlue isn't the only airline that charges basic economy passengers for carry-on bags. United Airlines has a strict policy for their basic economy passengers. They're required to pay extra for anything beyond a personal item on most of their flights. However, the airline does make some exceptions. According to United, basic economy passengers are allowed one carry-on bag on flights to Canada, South America, across the Atlantic, and on international flights across the Pacific. In addition, these passengers also receive one checked bag on their international flights across the Pacific.
