What makes each of us happy is different. But there's one easy way to increase your chances of feeling happy: choosing to live in a happier state.

In September, a company called WalletHub released a study that ranked the happiest states in the United States. They looked at 3 key things: emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community and environment. They used 30 different measures like the physical health of the people, sleep rates, food security, commute times, income growth, leisure time, and safety. They scored each measure on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 being the happiest. Then they averaged each state's scores to get the overall score.

After crunching the numbers, WalletHub named Hawaii as the happiest state.

According to the study, "Hawaii is the happiest state, living up to its reputation as an island paradise. Residents there report the highest levels of life satisfaction and the lowest depression rate in the nation." The researchers also noted that a huge 86% of adults in Hawaii say they are in good or better health, which is the second-best percentage in the United States.

The study found that Hawaii residents have the longest life expectancy in the nation.

The research also showed that Hawaii's positive economic conditions help residents stay happy. Hawaii has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, at 2.8 percent and the second-highest share of households with an annual income above $75,000. While residents are working hard, they still get to enjoy the third-most leisure time in the country.

Other states that ranked highly include Maryland, which came in second thanks to its population's high income and low stress levels and New Jersey, which placed third due to its population's low divorce rate. Utah, Delaware, Minnesota, Connecticut, Idaho, Nebraska, and Massachusetts rounded out the top 10.

Regardless of where you live, you can find happiness in the people around you. Theresa DiDonato, the associate dean of social sciences and graduate programs at Loyola University Maryland, explained that "high-quality relationships stand out as important predictors of individuals' happiness." Having rewarding interactions with people you value and who value you can provide the support, comfort, laughter, and intimacy that increase happiness.
