One of the nation’s top infectious disease experts, Dr, Anthony Fauci, stated that the United States is marching towards a difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the current travel advisories and restrictions will still be required for the Christmas holiday season as the number of positive cases across the country continues to rise. However, more than 9 million people are expected to travel during this time of the year even with the warnings provided by the CDC. Dr. Anthony Fauci also stated that we should take our own mitigation steps to reduce the number of positive cases, and help overwhelmed hospital systems. Unfortunately, Americans should expect a surge superimposed on the crisis we are already in, especially in the next couple of weeks this month. However, as Fauci said, it is not too late to do something about it. As people return from their Thanksgiving holiday travel, we should be more careful and take care of ourselves in public places. Fauci also urged Americans to wear masks at all times, especially when going out, to prevent the spread of the virus. He stated that Americans should make a decision as a family, city, state, and nation during these tough times, and that we need to follow any types of restrictions, particularly in the Christmas season, because all of us are entering into a very dangerous situation again. According to data from John Hopkins University, the United States had more than 13 million COVID-19 cases since March, and around 266,000 deaths. As deaths and positive cases increase across the country, hospital systems are struggling with capacity issues and shortage of medical staff because of an influx of patients. Dr. Fauci explained that associates and colleagues from different states in the country have talked to him, expressing concerns about potential state-wide lockdown measures and pleading for advice if these hospital issues grow worse. That’s  why he recommended us to protect ourselves and follow COVID-19 protocols to avoid the lockdown and reduce the burden of hospital systems. Some of the most renowned experts predict that the death totals per day across the country may spike this winter. According to the Covid Tracking Project, the United States had more than 4 million positive cases in November alone, doubling the record placed in October. Hospitalizations and deaths increase several weeks after the outpour of new cases. The assistant secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Brett Girior, stated that he is concerned about a surge in hospitalizations and positive cases because a lot of people still want to travel even with the risk of acquiring the virus. On the other hand, the coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Dr. Deborah Birx, explained that the country is entering the days with a much greeted number of hospitalizations, positive cases, and daily deaths after Thanksgiving compared to the period after the Memorial Day weekend. Indeed, the growing outbreak comes as government and health officials plan to provide the first batch of vaccines this month, with frontliners and other healthcare workers to be among the first recipients. The country is also investing hundreds of millions of dollars to improve rapid testing and soliciting more at-home COVID-tests for widespread distribution. However, these are not available yet.
