Based on the tracking service FlightAware data, more than 1,600 flights were canceled and 5,800 were delayed on Wednesday, February 22nd, as a severe winter storm blanketed two-thirds of the country in snow, ice, and strong winds.
O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Denver International Airport, and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport were the airports most impacted, according to FlightAware's "misery map," which combined cancellations and delays.
American Airlines and Southwest Airlines were the two largest US carrier stock decliners, each falling by 0.8% and 0.5%, respectively.
The companies with the most flights canceled or delayed on Wednesday were identified by FlightAware as SkyWest, Southwest, and Delta Air Lines.
The US Global Jets ETF finished the day unchanged while the S&P 500 index fell. United Airlines shares increased 1.2%, and Delta stock declined.
The National Weather Service recently issued a local alert for the Minneapolis area, warning about the following:
"Traffic will become more challenging later today, and almost impossible tonight when gusts increase and snow deepens."
This week, the NWS stated in a more comprehensive advisory that "almost the whole country (will be) experiencing some type of severe weather."
Due to outdated scheduling algorithms and its vast network, a heavy winter storm in December caused thousands of delays and cancellations, with Southwest canceling more than 16,700 flights.
The storm's expenses reached $800 million, and the airline later announced a quarterly deficit in January.
In statements made earlier this month at a Senate committee on the disaster, Andrew Watterson, Southwest's Chief Executive, pledged to legislators that "plenty of work and lots of money would be made to avoid a repeat."
