Effective immediately, Spirit will now allow passengers to check bags weighing up to 50 pounds, an increase of 10 pounds from the previous 40-pound limit. However, the airline still charges for both carry-on and checked luggage.
Moreover, Spirit has extended the validity of their future travel vouchers from 90 days to 12 months. This change applies to all vouchers issued on or after June 3rd.
Here's what Matt Klein, the executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Spirit Airlines, said in a statement:
"Spirit has revolutionized the industry before, and we're doing it again with this initial set of improvements that will usher in a new era of low-cost, high-quality flying. These enhancements offer each of our guests unmatched flexibility and reassurance, and this is just the start of our mission to make affordable travel more convenient and streamlined than ever."
Spirit Airlines has recently expanded its baggage allowance and extended the voucher time, just weeks after eliminating change and cancellation fees. Previously, the airline charged up to $119 to modify a flight. Now, travelers who change their flight only need to pay the fare difference if the new flight is more expensive, or they're eligible for a credit if the new trip costs less.
Spirit is an ultra-low-cost airline that charges passengers for most onboard extras, such as baggage and seat selection. However, customers who belong to the airline's paid yearly membership program, the Saver$ Club, can receive discounts on these same extras.
