AirTrain to JFK Airport: half the price, twice the convenience?

New York is encouraging travelers to take the AirTrain to and from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) this summer by cutting the fare in half.
The train, which connects JFK to both the subway and the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), will now cost $4.25 per ride, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. This discounted rate will be in effect through Labor Day.
Previously, the AirTrain cost $8.50 per ride. Children under 5 years old can still ride for free.
Here's what New York's Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement:
"As we have major construction underway at JFK, we're taking steps to reduce travel delays and affirm that taking the train is always the best option to get to the airport. With the busy summer season approaching, we're making the AirTrain more affordable for travelers, offering New Yorkers and visitors from around the world the high-quality travel experience they deserve."
Travelers can pay for the AirTrain with a contactless payment method, such as a credit card or mobile device, or they can purchase a new MetroCard for $1.

The decision to offer a discount on the AirTrain comes as part of a massive $19 billion construction project at JFK Airport. This project will create new passenger facilities, including 2 new international terminals and the renovation of 2 existing terminals. It'll also include a new ground transportation center and new roadways. Once the project is complete, JFK will have a brand-new Terminal 1, a new Terminal 6 (which will connect to Terminal 5), an expanded Terminal 4, and a revamped Terminal 8.
To help manage the increased traffic during this construction period, the Port Authority has opened a new, free drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot at the AirTrain station. In addition to providing access to public transit, the AirTrain also connects travelers to parking lots, hotel shuttles, and the rental car area.
The construction at JFK is taking place during one of the busiest summers on record. In fact, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened its highest-ever number of passengers on a single day, with more than 3 million travelers. The Port Authority estimates that JFK will see 700,000 more passengers this summer compared to last.
