Selecting an airline can greatly influence your overall journey, starting from the check-in process. Interestingly, a recent study has shown that luggage allowance is the primary consideration for most passengers when booking their flights.

The study, carried out by Travelport, a leading online travel retail platform, investigated the most valued in-flight amenities by travelers. The options covered a wide range, including legroom, complimentary Wi-Fi, and seat selection, among other factors.

The company's statement highlighted an intriguing finding:

"Despite tight wallets, almost a third (29.3 percent) of people aren't willing to give up traveling to save money."

While travelers might be cutting back on certain aspects of their travel experience to make it more affordable, the research from Travelport has identified the top 3 flight perks that are most important to them.

The study, which surveyed approximately 1,700 travelers who had flown at least once in the past 12 months, revealed that 63 percent of respondents said the number of free carry-on or checked bags was the most important factor when booking a flight. In addition, 50 percent indicated that flexible change and cancellation policies, along with free seat selection, were also key decision-making factors.

These 3 key factors were ranked as more important than other options, such as legroom, Wi-Fi, and in-flight entertainment. This suggests that travelers prioritize having their basic necessities met within the cost of their airfare.

This trend is notable, as many low-cost carriers, known for their à-la-carte pricing and additional fees beyond the base ticket, are adapting to these evolving preferences. In recent months, Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines have eliminated change fees and introduced new fare classes that include amenities, such as seat selection and baggage.

Similarly, JetBlue has started offering free carry-on bags with basic economy tickets, which were previously limited to a personal item no larger than a backpack. Southwest Airlines, which already provided flexible changes and a generous luggage allowance, is set to replace its open-boarding policy with assigned seating in the near future.
