The way to qualify for elite status will stay the same. Flyers must earn a combination of Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs), or meet a higher PQP threshold. This includes money spent with United and its partners. However, the requirements are increasing across all tiers, the airline announced:
- Silver: 5,000 PQPs and 15 PQFs or 6,000 PQPs (previously 4,000 PQPs and 12 PQFs or 5,000 PQPs)
- Gold: 10,000 PQPs and 30 PQFs or 12,000 PQPs (previously 8,000 PQPs and 24 PQFs or 10,000 PQPs)
- Platinum: 15,000 PQPs and 45 PQFs or 18,000 PQPs (previously 12,000 PQPs and 36 PQFs or 15,000 PQPs)
- 1K: 22,000 PQPs and 60 PQFs or 28,000 PQPs (previously 18,000 PQPs and 54 PQFs or 24,000 PQPs)
The requirement to fly at least 4 segments with United or United Express to qualify for elite status will stay the same. Reaching these thresholds during the 2025 calendar year will ensure your status for the rest of that year and all of 2026.
On February 1st, 2025, United will give current elite status holders a boost for the 2025 qualifying year. They'll get 300 PQP for Silver members, 600 PQP for Gold members, 900 PQP for Platinum members, and 1,400 PQP for 1K members.
A United credit card can help you earn PQP faster through everyday spending. The United Club Infinite and Club Business cards will give you 1 PQP per $15 spent, while other United cards will offer 1 PQP per $20 spent.
The maximum PQPs that can be earned on a United card will also increase. For the United Club Infinite and Club Business, it'll go up from 10,000 to 15,000 PQPs. For the United Quest, it'll increase from 6,000 PQPs to 9,000 PQPs.
United has made some changes to its PlusPoints program, which is available to its top-tier Platinum and 1K members. Starting in mid-2025, United plans to add more redemption options for PlusPoints, including bonus PQPs or PQFs, TravelBank cash, redeemable miles, and the ability to gift status to other travelers. However, the exact number of PlusPoints needed for each of these awards hasn't been specified yet.
Earning airline loyalty status has become more challenging across the industry since the pandemic. For example, last year, Delta Air Lines significantly increased the requirements for its Medallion program, but later relaxed some of the criteria after receiving feedback from its loyal flyers.
