Tap and go: United's new contactless payment option

The airline now offers a tap-to-pay feature, allowing passengers to use their mobile phones to make purchases on board. This feature was fully implemented across all of United's mainline aircraft on November 18th, as confirmed by the airline.
United passengers can now use contactless payment methods, such as an iPhone, Apple Watch, or any other digital wallet, as well as tap-enabled credit or debit cards. The flight crew can then accept these payments using an airline-issued iPhone.
In addition to the tap-to-pay option, United also allows customers to save a payment method to their MileagePlus account using the wallet feature in the airline's mobile app.
On domestic flights, United offers a selection of free snacks, including cookies and a snack mix, as well as complimentary non-alcoholic beverages like juices and sodas, including ginger ale. However, the airline charges for other items like Pringles, snack boxes, illy Cold Brew, beer, wine, and other alcoholic drinks. On longer flights, United also provides hot meals for purchase.
On most international flights, meals and some alcoholic drinks are included in the fare.

Alaska Airlines was the first airline in the United States to introduce tap-to-pay on board, doing so last year.
"We're always trying to improve and give our customers the easiest and most caring experience possible," said Charu Jain, Alaska's senior vice president of innovation and merchandising, in a statement at the time.
Delta Air Lines also offers tap-to-pay, allowing passengers to make contactless payments using a digital wallet on their phone or a contactless credit/debit card.
Contactless payment isn't the only recent change United has made. In September, the airline announced a partnership with Starlink to provide free in-flight Wi-Fi across its entire fleet. The airline will test the Wi-Fi throughout 2025 and then roll it out by the end of next year.
