"Through teamwork, we successfully achieved this goal," said Joshua Heiss, the noise abatement and special projects manager at the San Antonio International Airport.
"The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme evaluates and verifies the efforts that airports are making to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Last year, SAT successfully achieved Level 1 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) for the first time. Stinson has also reached the same goal, and that's very encouraging."
The San Antonio Airport System (SAAS) states that it's aligning itself with the city's SA Climate Ready goals based on these past actions:
- In October 2019, the City of San Antonio released the SA Climate Ready plan to address the current and future challenges of a changing climate and to build on actions toward a low-carbon future.
- The SA Climate Ready plan includes strategies for adaptation and preparation for a changing climate, as well as mitigation strategies, to reduce San Antonio's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
- The City of San Antonio has set a goal to make San Antonio carbon neutral by 2050, with interim goals of a 41% reduction in total GHG emissions by 2030 and a 71% reduction by 2040.
- The SA Climate Ready plan has set interim goals to reduce transportation emissions by 47% by 2030 and 75% by 2040.
SAAS states that the ACA program helps the Aviation Department lead the way in sustainability efforts and achieving the goals set in the SA Climate Ready plan.
SAT and Stinson Municipal Airport are now part of 28 airports across North America that have achieved Level 1 carbon mapping status, representing 11% of North American air traffic.
The ACA Carbon Mapping program has 6 levels of carbon management, from mapping emission sources to achieving carbon neutrality, transformation, and transition.
The next goal for the SAAS is to pursue Level 2 certification before October 1st, 2023. With Level 2 certification, airport staff and consultants will develop a plan to manage the San Antonio Airport System's carbon emissions and start to demonstrate emission reductions.
