Harry Reid International Airport's (LAS) Terminal 3 will be renamed Terminal 2 as part of a major plan to expand the airport and add many new gates.

On Oct. 1, 2024, officials from the Clark County Department of Aviation presented their improvement plan to the Clark County Commission.

In 2023, the airport hit a record 57.6 million passengers, marking a 9.4% rise from 2022. Its traffic ranks in the top 10 nationwide, boosted by the number of private planes. Such a surge in passengers creates a demand for convenient and affordable parking options. The airport's modernization plan aims to upgrade and expand Terminal 1, improve passenger flow in Terminal 3, and enhance connections between the two. Notably, there's no Terminal 2 now.

"Our aim is to make Harry Reid International Airport a key hub and improve the overall airport experience," the presentation stated. "The revamped campus will boost guest experience and streamline airport operations, with safe transit options supporting visitors and local communities."

As part of this plan, the current piers at Terminal 1, used mainly by Southwest Airlines, will be replaced with new concourses, increasing from 39 gates to 65.

Terminal 3, launched in 2012, will be renamed Terminal 2 after the original Terminal 2 was torn down in 2016. Plans include adding escalators to help passengers move smoothly from the terminal to the secure area.

Moreover, a new one-way circular road will enhance connections between the terminals and multimodal centers for ride-shares and public transport, as drivers currently pick up passengers in the garages.

To ease congestion at Reid Airport, a new facility called the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport (SNSA) is being planned in Jean, about 30 minutes south.

"The new commercial airport will free up airspace and roads and will need new terminals and general aviation to support future growth," said the aviation department.

As reported by 8 News Now in April, the airport project is progressing from nearly 3 decades of early planning to the environmental phase, with a target for completion set for 2037.

In 2021, the county renamed the airport in memory of the late Democratic Senator Harry Reid. Upgrades to signage and related changes were funded through donations and private sources.
