Air New Zealand was named the safest full-service airline in the world for 2025, keeping the title for the second year in a row.
The national airline of New Zealand has been at the top for years, surpassing second-place Qantas again,
"It was very close again between Air New Zealand and Qantas for first place with just 1.50 points separating them," said Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com. "Although both airlines have the highest safety standards and pilot training, Air New Zealand has a newer fleet than Qantas, which makes a difference."
The third-place spot was tied among Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, and Emirates.
"From fleet age to pilot skills, safety practices, fleet size, and incidents, their scores were the same," Petersen said, adding, "we really couldn't separate these airlines."
That was followed by Virgin Australia and Etihad Airways, completing the top five.
Alaska Airlines was the only U.S. airline to make the top 10, landing at No. 9, while Hawaiian Airlines was No. 12, American Airlines was No. 13, Delta Airlines was No. 21, and United Airlines was No. 23.
To create the rankings, the group considered various safety factors, including serious incidents in the past two years, fleet age and size, incident rates, fatalities, airline profits, audits, and pilot skills and training.
