When most folks think of Sarasota, Florida, they picture the stunning white-sand beaches and warm, clear waters. Many visitors stick to the shore or their beach hotels. But just 20 miles inland lies a whole different world, full of unique wildlife that's as captivating as the beach.
Myakka River State Park is one of Florida's biggest and oldest parks. It centers around the Myakka River, a wild haven for the state's unique creatures. Here, you'll find miles of wetlands and vast prairies bursting with wildflowers. Keep an eye out for limpkins (a tropical wetland bird) wading through the water and ospreys flying overhead among the live oaks draped in Spanish moss.
For those craving a bit more action, Myakka River State Park has some of the best fishing and boating in the area. Anglers with a recreational freshwater license can catch brown hoplo, blue tilapia, vermiculated sailfin catfish, and walking catfish. Flat-bottom boats offer daily tours around Upper Myakka Lake, while you can rent stand-up paddleboards and kayaks in the park. (Just a heads up: canoeing and kayaking south of State Road 72 requires a permit from the ranger station.) It's hard to believe this park is only 20 miles west of Siesta Key's sandy beaches!
Water activities are a big draw at the park, but it's also popular for hiking and biking. You can rent bikes here and enjoy 7 miles of paved roads by Upper Myakka Lake. Mountain bikers have plenty of dirt roads to explore. Hikers will love the Myakka Trail, a well-kept 38.9-mile loop that can be shortened for a day hike.
Guided boat, tram, and wildlife tours are also available for those wanting to learn more about the park.
The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Since Florida can get hot in summer, early spring and late fall are great times to visit Myakka River State Park.
