The other day, something incredible happened at the Washington Dulles airport. A Transportation Security Administration dog handler saved a woodchuck from the busy runway there.
The name of this hero is Shelby Tibbs. TSA Explosives Detection Canine Handler had spotted the creature running down the airport runway as he was finishing a training session with Dux, a German Short-Haired Pointer.
Tibbs, concerned for the animal's safety, drove over to fetch the marmot. He said the animal seemed to be suffering from the heat.
"It was boiling that day, and the tarmac felt like more than 100 degrees," Tibbs said, according to the TSA. "I ran him down, wrapped the leash around him several times, and picked him up."
Tibbs, who has a background in animal control and is vaccinated against rabies, wrapped a leash in the marmot's mouth to keep himself from biting.
Working with staff from the Operations Division of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), Shelby transported the groundhog to a creek outside of Dulles, where it was released.
"I suppose he wanted to take a flight somewhere cold because it was so hot that day. I don't think he was able to buy a ticket," joked Tibbs. "But he was a perfect passenger as we drove to the nearby creek."
Since that episode, the airport staff has nicknamed Tibbs "The Groundhog Whisperer."
