On July 22, the U.S. Department of State announced its plan to pull out of UNESCO.

UNESCO, or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, was founded after World War II to "promote peace through its cooperative endeavors." Since then, the organization has created a valuable list of cultural and natural landmarks, many of which are popular travel destinations.

As a result of this decision, the United States will no longer be involved in funding, selecting, or supporting these projects. Secretary of State Tammy Bruce stated the decision to withdraw was made because continued involvement "isn't in the national interest of the United States."

Bruce said in a statement, "UNESCO works to advance divisive social and cultural causes and maintains an outsized focus on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, a globalist, ideological agenda for international development at odds with our America First foreign policy."

This is not the first time the U.S. has left the organization. The Trump administration withdrew in 2018, and the country rejoined in 2023 under former President Joe Biden. Before that, United States funding was stopped in 2011 under former President Barack Obama, and the country fully withdrew once before in 1984 under former President Ronald Reagan.

While not unprecedented, this latest withdrawal could still affect travelers. Here's what you should know.

When will the United States officially leave UNESCO?

The withdrawal will become official on December 31, 2026. Until then, the U.S. will remain a full member of the organization.

What does participation in UNESCO involve?

UNESCO consists of 194 member states, each of which contributes financially and appoints national representatives. The organization works to set global standards and leads efforts to preserve history, culture, education, and the environment.

How many UNESCO World Heritage sites are in the U.S.?

The U.S. has 26 World Heritage Sites and 28 biosphere reserves. Worldwide, there are 1,248 sites across 170 countries. Examples of U.S. sites include Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Everglades National Parks, as well as Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the San Antonio Missions in Texas, and the Statue of Liberty.

How will this affect travel to UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

The U.S. was one of UNESCO's largest members and a significant source of funding for its projects, including World Heritage Sites. In response to the withdrawal, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay expressed deep regret over the decision but confirmed the organization's commitment to its mission.

Azoulay stated that while the announcement was regrettable, it was also expected and UNESCO was prepared. She explained that the organization, which once heavily depended on U.S. funding, has since "undertaken major structural reforms and diversified our funding sources."

Although some changes may occur, UNESCO doesn't plan to cut staff or operations at this time. This means you can continue to plan your travel to UNESCO sites as usual.

Regarding concerns for American travelers, Azoulay said that UNESCO's policy of an "open door for everyone" will continue. She stated, "UNESCO's purpose is to welcome all the nations of the world, and the United States of America is and will always be welcome."
