RDU has been negatively impacted by route consolidation at Frontier Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Allegiant Air. Eight nonstop airline services were dropped from the airport's schedule this week, which eliminated a few locations.
The majority of the changes were made by Frontier, which this week canceled six nonstop routes from its RDU schedule, including five destinations where it's the only airline operating: Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Trenton, New Jersey, and Buffalo, New York.
Other flights that have been canceled include Frontier's RDU-to-Detroit service (which is also provided by Delta).
Due to Allegiant's suspension of service, RDU now only has one airline and one destination: Punta Gorda, Florida. The nonstop service from Delta to Nashville, Tennessee, which is still operated by American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, has also been canceled.
Since 2015, Allegiant has provided service to RDU.
When contacted for comment on their actions on Thursday, the airlines didn't respond right away.
The cuts match with recent announcements of the new service at RDU, especially by ultra-low-cost carriers like Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines, which are both very new. Recently, Avelo announced intentions to establish a crew base at RDU, which will result in the creation of about 50 new workplaces as the airline expands.
American Airlines will begin its own nonstop service to Cincinnati in January, but the only airline having Buffalo and Cleveland on its schedule was Frontier.
