As the airline keeps going to limit capacity growth due to the continuing pilot shortage, American Airlines removed roughly 50,000 flights from its summer schedule.
According to aviation data provider Cirium, the Fort Worth-based operator will now run 875,133 flights from May to September after reducing its schedule by 5%. 875,133 flights are scheduled by American between May and September. The majority of the cuts, 19,887 and 19,920 flights, respectively, take place in June and July.
The summer schedule changes, according to American spokeswoman Andrea Koos, are "in line" with the carrier's method of network and schedule planning. American Airlines releases a sample schedule 331 days in advance and then makes adjustments as the departure date approaches based on the timetable it intends to follow.
Here's what Koos said as well:
"In line with how we altered our timetable in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic. We're now posting our final schedule about 100 days in advance. Through the summer, American is honored to provide clients with the most extensive network of any US air carrier, with an average of more than 5,500 daily departures."
Passengers who may have had their flights rescheduled due to upcoming schedule changes will still have other ways to reach their destinations, according to Koos. Customers have the right to a full refund in accordance with the company's usual schedule-changing policy if a move doesn't satisfy their needs.
Where to expect the cutting?
American's output between May and September will be up 6% from last year but down roughly 4% from 2019 after the most recent reduction.
The biggest cuts will be made in a number of the larger American hubs:
- Chicago O'Hare International Airport: reduction of 5,910 flights, or 11.3%;
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport: reduction of 5,054 flights, or 5.3%;
- Charlotte Douglas International Airport: reduction of 3,991 flights, or 4.5%;
- Philadelphia International Airport: reduction of 3,706 flights, or 10.3%;
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: reduction of 2,822 flights, or 11.1%.
Robert Isom, American Airlines' CEO, reported that despite the capacity restrictions, there is still a high demand for traveling. His statement that post-holiday bookings are off to a "good" start was made to analysts last month.
In fact, Isom said that the current post-holiday booking season was the best one in the company's history.
"Domestic and short-haul international travel demand is still the highest. We predict that the good market environment will persist in 2023 and that demand for long-haul international travel will continue to rise this year."
