Flying on a budget: can you really get cheaper than Frontier?

This discovery is the outcome of a recent analysis carried out by the airline compensation organization AirAdvisor. The study scrutinized the overall passenger revenue per seat mile for the top 10 airlines in the United States. Frontier Airlines emerged as the clear frontrunner, being over $0.01 per mile more affordable than the next lowest-cost carrier, Spirit Airlines.
Here's what AirAdvisor stated in the study:
"Frontier Airlines is often referred to as an ultra-low-cost carrier, and this certainly rings true based on our research. US airlines don't get any cheaper than this as a whole."
This ranking comes at a time when both Frontier and Spirit have eliminated most of their change and cancellation fees, and Spirit has made it easier for passengers to use their travel vouchers for longer periods.
Following Frontier and Spirit, Hawaiian Airlines was found to be the 3rd cheapest airline and the most affordable non-ultra-low-cost carrier. In fact, AirAdvisor determined that Hawaiian Airlines offered the best combination of reliability and affordability among all the airlines they reviewed.

Rounding out the top 5 were the low-cost airline Allegiant Air and JetBlue. However, it's worth noting that Allegiant's revenue per seat mile was still $0.03 more than Frontier's.
Delta Air Lines emerged as the most expensive airline per mile but also one of the most reliable. However, there are still ways to save money when flying with Delta.
According to AirAdvisor's report, Delta offers flights to destinations worldwide, making it a viable option even for budget-conscious travelers. The airline's website features a section dedicated to current flight deals, and travelers can subscribe to their newsletter to stay informed about new sales.
Following Delta, Southwest Airlines was the 2nd most expensive airline on the list. This was partly due to Southwest's optional upgraded fare categories, which come with perks, such as seat selection.
To compile the list, AirAdvisor averaged the revenue per available seat mile for each airline in 2022 and 2023. The company specializes in helping travelers claim compensation from airlines when they're owed, and they receive a commission when the airline pays.
Beyond booking the cheapest airlines, travelers can save money by purchasing tickets with specific airlines on certain days, being flexible with their travel plans, and setting price alerts.
