Major cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Baltimore are now seeing the initial emergence of the first red-eye flights.

In March 2024, Southwest Airlines announced its plans to introduce its first red-eye, or overnight, flights. Now, more details about these new flight options for passengers are being revealed.
The inaugural overnight flights will depart on February 13th, 2025 and arrive on February 14th, 2025. These initial journeys will be from Las Vegas to both Baltimore and Orlando. Southwest will also operate flights from Los Angeles to Baltimore and Nashville, as well as from Phoenix to Baltimore.
According to a July 2024 Investor Update, "Southwest plans to phase in additional red-eye flying in the carrier's coming schedules as part of its multi-year transformation to a 24-hour operation."
The airline has also been quietly releasing more red-eye flights, which will begin on March 6th, 2025. These include a flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta that departs at 11:00 p.m. and arrives the next day at 5:45 a.m., as well as flights from Phoenix to Orlando and from Los Angeles to Houston (Hobby Airport). In addition, Southwest will operate flights from San Diego, CA and Sacramento, CA to Baltimore, MD. These new routes were first reported by SimplyFlying.
When confirming the additional flight routes, a Southwest Airlines spokesperson shared the following:
"We intend to continue growing our red-eye offerings as our schedule is extended."
Overnight flights can be a practical choice for travelers crossing the country, allowing them to avoid losing a day to travel and offering more options for connecting flights. From Southwest's business viewpoint, these overnight flights contribute to their overall revenue by giving them additional flight capacity to sell tickets, as the airline mentioned in their investor update.
