It's simpler to accumulate points and achieve higher status.
So what's new with Southwest's loyalty program?

The airline recently announced updates to its Cash+Points program. This program allows passengers to use a combination of points and cash to pay for tickets when they don't have enough points or don't want to use all of their points. The changes include earning loyalty points on the cash portion of a booking, as well as other perks. Currently, travelers don't earn Rapid Rewards points on the cash part of a mileage ticket, but this will change starting January 1st, 2025.
Southwest first introduced the cash and points program in May 2024. This program lets loyalty program members use as little as 1,000 points, with cash covering the rest of the ticket's cost.
In its statement, Southwest confirmed these changes, saying they are part of "reimagining" the airline's customer experience.
In addition, an airline representative made the following comments:

The airline has announced that cash payments, which will now earn points, will contribute towards the earning thresholds for A-List and A-List Preferred statuses. These 2 statuses offer special perks and benefits for frequent flyers on Southwest. To achieve A-List status, you need to take 20 one-way flights or accumulate 35,000 loyalty points. The benefits of A-List include priority boarding, a 25% earnings bonus, and other perks. For A-List Preferred, you need 40 flights or 70,000 points, and you'll get similar amenities plus free in-flight Internet, a 100% earnings bonus on points, and complimentary premium drinks.
In addition to earning points and loyalty credits, cash payments for Cash+Points tickets will also count towards points for the popular Companion Pass. This pass allows a designated companion to fly for free with a Southwest frequent flier on a paid ticket. The airline has recently updated the Companion Pass program to allow for modifications and updates through their website.
