Travelers know airfare can be pricey, but a new report shares a smart way to save cash!
The Department of Transportation (DOT) often ranks the cheapest and most expensive airports in the United States, based on average round-trip ticket costs. Their latest report showed fares ranging dramatically, from a low of $90 to a steep $1,600.
The data indicates that driving a little further can lead to big savings. For instance, a round-trip flight from Orlando International Airport (MCO) costs about $269.61, while just 30 miles away, a ticket from Sanford International Airport (SFB) averages only $116.79. Budget airlines like Avelo Airlines operate from Sanford, helping keep airfare costs down.
Branson, MO, came in as the cheapest airport in America, with an average fare of only $90.76. Other affordable airports include Mobile, AL ($98.75), Columbus, OH ($124.36), Provo, UT ($126.15), and Phoenix, AZ ($132.37).
Several Florida airports also offer lower fares like Lakeland ($131.55) and Punta Gorda ($129.30).
On the flip side, the priciest airports were often located in far-off places that are tough to get to like Alaska's Adak Island, Cold Bay, and Valdez, where average one-way fares topped $1,000. Flights to Unalaska, AK, home of Dutch Harbor, average $1,304.81. The highest cost was for Guam, with an average fare of $1,658.81.
The Department of Transportation released the report on January 14, 2025, covering the third quarter of 2024. It offered a look at airfares across the United States and found that the national average fare was $365.64.
