Spirit, with Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) as its main hub, has updated its policies to enforce a stricter dress code, banning certain clothing and requiring some passengers with body art to cover up.
In its revised "Contract of Carriage," the airline notes that passengers cannot board if they're "barefoot" or "inadequately clothed." This means "see-through clothing; not properly covered; exposed breasts, buttocks, or other private areas," or "clothing or body art that is lewd, obscene, or offensive, or has an unpleasant odor unless due to a qualified disability."
The airline made this change after several incidents raised concerns about passenger attire. Quartz reported that these situations included a passenger being removed for wearing a crop top and another for having explicit language on their clothing.
Spirit isn't the only airline with a dress code. United Airlines states that passengers can be removed for being "barefoot, not properly clothed, or wearing lewd, obscene, or offensive clothing." Delta Air Lines also adds that they can remove passengers "when barefoot" or if a passenger's attire, hygiene, or odor could annoy others. American Airlines also says that passengers should "dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing aren't allowed."
Spirit's update might seem pretty standard, but some travelers in South Florida, where the airline is located, think the new rules are too strict.
"There are just too many rules. People just want to get to their destinations… It shouldn't matter how folks dress while flying," said Spirit passenger Rastaway J. to CBS. "That's unfair because everyone should wear what they choose," added Andrea Garcia. "Even if someone disapproves, their opinion shouldn't dictate what others can wear."
