  • A fresh review checked out the most walkable cities globally.
  • Munich ranks as the №1 city.
  • Earlier research highlighted Florence, Italy as the top spot for walkers.

The essence of a vacation often lies in venturing out and discovering a new locale. For many, the most rewarding way to achieve this is by putting on comfortable shoes and embarking on a leisurely, extended walk. However, it's important to acknowledge that not all urban environments are equally conducive to pedestrian exploration. (As an individual residing in Lisbon can attest, while the city is indeed navigable on foot, its numerous hills present a considerable challenge.)

Nevertheless, certain destinations exist where traversing the city entirely on foot is not only feasible but actively encouraged. Compare the Market AU, through its recent analysis, has identified the preeminent city for such pedestrian experiences: Munich, Germany.

Methodology

The home loan marketplace website recently published its ranking of the world's most walkable cities. To determine which urban centers were the most pedestrian-friendly, the organization analyzed various destinations based on a range of pertinent factors. These included each city's total rainfall, the number of available walking trails, individual safety scores, the cost of public transportation, the extent of biking trails, associated public transit expenses, and the prevalence of car-free zones. Following a comprehensive tabulation of the collected data, Munich emerged as the city most amenable to walking.

"Situated in the heart of Bavaria, Munich officially holds the distinction of being the world's most walkable city, and this is attributable to several key factors," the findings highlighted. Among these reasons were its extensive network of hundreds of miles of dedicated bike trails and the significant statistic that 86% of the local populace resides within a 1-kilometer radius (slightly more than half a mile) of a designated car-free area.

"Despite Munich's public transportation system being the 3rd most expensive among those evaluated, it achieves the 4th-highest score for safety, a crucial consideration for pedestrians; furthermore, it shares the second-highest ranking for the proportion of residents living within 1 kilometer of healthcare and educational facilities, at an impressive 85%," the report further noted.

Securing the 2nd position in the ranking is Milan, Italy, which garnered high marks primarily due to the fact that "80% of its population lives within a 1-kilometer proximity to both healthcare and educational services."

Completing the top 3 is Warsaw, Poland, which also earned a high ranking owing to its relatively compact urban layout. The findings also indicated that public transportation in Warsaw is notably affordable, with the average cost of a one-way ticket being approximately $1.

The analysis further revealed that 9 out of the top 10 most walkable cities are located in Europe, with Helsinki and Paris rounding out the top 5. Tokyo stands out as the sole non-European city in the top 6, securing the 6th position. Madrid claimed the 7th spot, followed by Oslo, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam, which completed the top 10.

However, it's important to note that other pedestrian-friendly locations are distributed across the globe, with Sydney, Australia, securing the 11th position and NYC emerging as the highest-ranked U.S. city, placing at number 34.
