According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, American canceled nearly 460 flights, or 17 percent of its main schedule, on Saturday. American's chief operating officer, David Seymour, wrote in a service note the problems began because of strong wind gusts Thursday that reduced capacity at the Dallas-Fort Worth hub.
Meanwhile, the "unavailability of pilots and flight attendants" was the reason for most flight cancellations on Saturday and Sunday. CNBC reports this, as it had access to the document.
"Due to such weather conditions throughout the system, our staff is beginning to be reduced as crew members stop performing their normal duties," Seymour wrote. He said most passengers will be paid cash compensation and sent on flights with other airlines. Also, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines cut 86 flights or two percent of Saturday's flights.
