The first checked bag fee went up from $30 to $35, while the second bag fee rose from $40 to $45. This move by Alaska Airlines sparked a trend, as other airlines soon followed suit and matched the price hike. As a result, travelers on domestic flights can now expect to pay between $35 and $45 for their first and second checked bags, respectively, which translates to a 12% to 16% increase. However, it's important to note that ultra-low-cost budget carriers, such as Spirit and Frontier, may have different fee structures.
The baggage fees for short-haul international flights to destinations like Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean are typically similar to the domestic fees. However, the fees for long-haul international flights to Europe, Asia, and beyond can vary significantly. Therefore, it's crucial for travelers to carefully review the airline's website for a detailed list of fees before booking their flights.
According to the airlines, the increase in baggage fees is driven by the rising costs associated with transporting luggage. For example, Delta stated that this was their first fee increase since 2018 and the higher amount reflects the higher costs they're currently facing.
One airline's new dynamic pricing for checked bags
Travelers have become accustomed to the concept of dynamic or surge pricing, largely thanks to companies like Uber. Now, this idea is making its way into the airline industry as well. In early 2024, JetBlue Airways, a New York City-based airline, joined other carriers in raising fees, but they took it a step further by introducing dynamic pricing for baggage.
The cost of checking a bag will now vary depending on whether the airline considers it a "peak" or "off-peak" period. As expected, peak dates cover major holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, as well as a significant portion of the summer travel season, amounting to about half the year.

The good news is that planning ahead can save travelers some money. By adding a bag at least 24 hours before the flight, you can save $10. However, those who wait until the airport and travel during peak periods will face higher charges, paying as much as $50 for the first checked bag and $70 for the second.
Ways to steer clear of checked bag fees
The first solution is to pack more into your carry-on bag. You can achieve this by using clever techniques like rolling your clothes instead of folding them, which helps save valuable space. This way, you can avoid checked bag fees altogether and don't have to worry about the airline losing your luggage during your trip. If you manage to fit everything in your carry-on but still don't want to deal with finding overhead space, many airlines will let you check your bag at the gate for free.
Another option is to choose an airline that doesn't charge fees for checking bags. Southwest Airlines is a well-known example, allowing each customer to check 2 bags for free.
