The updates impact every flight that was booked starting March 4.
Fly smarter, earn faster? What's new with Southwest's points program?

- Southwest Airlines has changed how points are earned across different ticket types.
- The budget airline plans to boost points for its pricier tickets while lowering points for cheaper ones.
- Southwest travelers can also rack up points by reserving hotel stays and booking cruises.
A prominent airline is implementing adjustments to its frequent flyer program, impacting how passengers accrue valuable loyalty rewards.
Southwest's fare structure already differentiates the number of points earned per dollar spent based on the class of service purchased. For instance, the most economical fare, Wanna Get Away, now yields 2 points for every dollar spent, whereas the premium Business Select fare now offers a significantly higher earning rate of 14 points per dollar. Opting for these higher-tier fares provides a faster pathway to accumulating points that can be redeemed for complimentary flights.
Previously, passengers flying on Wanna Get Away fares earned 6 points per dollar. Within the Wanna Get Away+ fare class, the earning rate has increased from the prior 4 points to the current 6 points per dollar. Moreover, the Business Select fare has seen an increase in its earning rate, moving from 12 points per dollar previously.
Southwest Airlines confirmed that these adjustments to the points-earning structure for several fare classes took effect on March 4, 2025. These changes apply to all flight bookings made on or after March 4, 2025, at 12:01 AM Central Time. The airline clarified that flights booked before this specific timeframe, even if the travel date is later, will adhere to the previous point accrual rates based on the original purchase price.
The Rapid Rewards program was established in 1996, initially designed to reward passengers with a complimentary round-trip ticket after completing 8 round-trip journeys, as detailed in the company's annual report from that year. At its inception, the airline emphasized that this program offered the quickest path to earning free flights compared to its industry competitors.
In the present year, 2025, Rapid Rewards members can accumulate reward and loyalty points through various avenues, including air travel and bookings with partner entities, with the flexibility to redeem these points for a wider array of options beyond just flights.
As stated on Southwest Airlines' official website, "As a Rapid Rewards Member, you earn points by flying or spending with our partners. Use them how and when you want. Plus, if you're short on points, you can always purchase more to get that reward you've been eyeing."
Expanding its rewards program, Southwest recently introduced Southwest Cruises, enabling passengers to earn Rapid Rewards points on cruise vacations as well.
The airline offers 1 point for every dollar spent on cruise bookings and has established partnerships with prominent cruise operators, such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, and Virgin Voyages.
