One of the major U.S. airline companies, American Airlines, has decided to require its employees to be vaccinated, the Associated Press (AP) reports, citing a letter from company CEO Doug Parker to employees.
The same decision was also made by smaller U.S. carriers - Alaska Airlines and JetBlue.
These companies provide air travel and air cargo services to the government, making them government contractors, thus extending to them President Biden's executive order on mandatory vaccination among employees of companies working with the government, AP writes.
Parker said in his letter that American Airlines is still working on the terms of the imposed requirement. However, it's clear that those who refuse to be vaccinated will not be allowed to work for the company. The pilots' union estimates that about 30 percent of American Airlines pilots aren't vaccinated.
So American Airlines will become the second major U.S. airline company to introduce mandatory vaccination (the first one was United Airlines).
At the same time, Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian said that Delta Air Lines, the other U.S. major airline company, has not yet decided on mandatory vaccination.
He also noted that the company is consulting with the government to determine what measures need to be implemented to ensure employees meet state vaccination requirements.
Bastian believes about 90 percent of Delta Air Lines employees will be vaccinated by November, as the company has decided to charge an additional $200 a month for each unvaccinated employee.
