CNN reported on Tuesday that the heads of Boeing and Airbus Americas, Dave Calhoun and Jeffrey Knittel, appealed to the US Department of Transportation to delay the planned January 5 launch of 5G wireless.
As Calhoun and Knittel pointed out in a letter to Secretary Pete Buttigieg, 5G base stations' radio signals "negatively affect the safety of flights." In particular, they misrepresent the readings of a pilot-navigational device such as an altimeter. It's especially needed while landing in difficult weather conditions.
CNN notes that altimeter malfunctions can affect "hundreds of thousands of flights each year, causing delays or forcing pilots to change routes," according to experts. The interference comes because the upper-frequency threshold for 5G of 4.2 GHz is the same as the lower threshold used in aviation. In early December, the US Federal Aviation Administration already imposed a new requirement forbidding pilots from using the auto-landing system where 5G radio signals could interfere with onboard devices.
Calhoun and Knittel proposed reducing the capacity of 5G base stations near the airports. Besides, they urged Biden's administration to convince the Federal Communications Commission to reconsider its position (the FCC insists the evidence doesn't support the assumption that 5G radio signals affect aircraft instruments).
