Based on the study carried out by the UK insurance price comparison platform Quotezone.co.uk, Italy tops the list when it comes to pickpocket incidents among popular European tourist destinations. The study examined references to pickpocketing in visitor reviews of renowned attractions, such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon in Rome, the Duomo di Milano in Milan, and the Gallerie Degli Uffizi in Florence.
The findings show that Italy had 478 pickpocketing mentions for every million British visitors, the highest among the European countries included in the research.
Greg Wilson, the founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant. He advises travelers to leave valuable items like expensive jewelry in the hotel safe and to use a secure cross-body bag with zipped compartments for phones and wallets, or even a money belt. Theft can happen anywhere, and tourist hotspots provide convenient opportunities for criminals to target holidaymakers' belongings.

Travelers visiting France should be mindful of their surroundings, as the country ranked second on the list with 251 mentions of British visitors being pickpocketed per million. This statistic is particularly concerning around the Eiffel Tower, Paris' most iconic landmark, which the study found to be the worst location for pickpockets in the country.
Similarly, Spain and Germany also saw high rates of pickpocketing targeting British visitors, with 111 mentions per million in each country. The popular Las Ramblas area of Barcelona, in particular, is a location where travelers should be especially vigilant about protecting their belongings.
In contrast, Ireland appears to be a relatively safer destination, with only 7 mentions of pickpocketing per million British visitors. However, even in Ireland, the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, a popular tourist attraction, is one location where visitors should be cautious about their personal items.
If you're unfortunate enough to become a victim of pickpockets, the study's author advises you to file a police report, as this can be beneficial for any potential insurance claims you may need to make.
